Eric,
    I certainly do not believe that going to church is a requirement for salvation (or even a factor).  However, my experience is that when I am grow closer to Christ I am naturally actively seeking fellowship.  That does not have to come through church, but through time spent with other likeminded believers.  For me that is not as much church (I am more often then not out of town on weekends), instead it is through a Christian group on Campus and a Christian camp I volenteer at.
