Hi Carla,
We went to a gathering at a friend's house in the central Missouri rolling hills area. Their house is on a hill which drops down to their private lake, and all is surrounded by trees, with forest on the opposite side of the lake. We ate outdoors under the shade trees. We had the traditional fried chicken with mashed potatoes, country gravy, and all the side dishes that we guests contributed. It was great fun. Some went fishing in the lake (only one person caught some fish - 3 little ones), some played with the dogs (4), and some went out to see the horses and ride. At dusk, we shot off fireworks. During the fireworks, one of us would sing a phrase from a patriotic song. Unfortunately, most of us sing off key! It's legal in the counties, not in any towns that I know of, here in Missouri. All safety precautions were taken, and it was quite a display. We also had sparklers, which were delightful. When I got my first sparkler, I stood with one hand up and the other as if I were
clasping a book, and said, "I'm the Statue of Liberty." 'Twas great fun! I was reminded of the large extended family gatherings we had when I was a child.
