I think the best use made of the high cost of living in California was by
Okies who bought homes after WW II, lived in them until the 1980s, then
sold them at California prices, moved back to Oklahoma (or Arkansas),
bought a nice retirement home for a fraction of what they sold their
California home, and lived happily ever after on the difference.
