Prices are higher in Barbados? Well, its an island. It was settled by
people who wanted to make money exporting sugar cane, and they always had
to import everything, including their labor supply. If the export market
isn't what it was, there isn't much else to do to make money to pay high
import prices, except get Americans with more money to come spend it.

Barbados is where the extreme form of slavery that screwed American up so
badly came from, particularly through the settlement of Charleston by the
Company of Barbados Adventurers. Of course Barbados got it from the
Dutch, who got it from the Portuguese, who were running sugar and cotton
plantations with slave labor off the African coast before Columbus ever
sailed. (The Portuguese kidnapped Jewish children and trained them to be
the semi-enslaved administrators of the island colonies). Isn't it
amazing what long strings of history you can find when you pull on any
familiar thing?
