[GCFL-discuss] Republican in the family

My parents told me a funny true story when they were in town last week
end.

My mother is a Republican. She has been all her life. She is not happy
with the quality of many Republican candidates, and is embarrassed that a
Republican administration would indulge in reckless deficit spending, but
her family has been Republican ever since her great-grandfather came home
to Tennessee, from serving in the United States Army 1861-1865, with
discharge papers signed by Abraham Lincoln. She still sends money to the
party now and then.

My father gets all kinds of mail from the Republican Party, and some
phone calls now and then. My father is not, and has never been, a
Republican. He is a Democrat, and his parents voted for the Socialist
Party, back in the days when many mayors and not a few state legislators
(and one Milwaukee congressman) were socialists. He tells those who call
"My wife is the Republican in the family, do you want to talk to her?"
They don't. They want to talk to him.

My parents can only figure out one way his name even got onto Republican
mail and call lists. My parents have a single joint checking account.
When my mother sends in a donation, it is written on a check with both
their names, at their home address, and signed by her. Somehow, the
information is stripped off the check with a focus on my father's name,
not my mother's name.

Go figure.
