Sorry if I sound a little morbid.
Does anyone remember when they used to count traffic deaths on holiday
weekends?
They haven't done it in ages, probably because drunken driving is way down
from the 60s & 70s, thanks in part to organizations like MADD, public
awareness, and changes in the laws. Also traffic fatalities in general are
down because of seatbelts and airbags.
In any case, back then, a big topic in the news over holiday weekends was a
running count of how many traffic fatalities there were so far, and
predictions as to high the count was going to go. 500 was common. Do you
guys remember this?
Anyway, MAD magazine (what me worry) once did a parody of this where they
had a Jerry Lewis type telethon begging people to contribute to the cause
(the death count).
The reason this comes to mind is that the way the news media keep focusing
on how many casualties there have been in South Asia, and how many there
might be, reminds me of those counts.
