[GCFL-discuss] Covet? What is that ?

I wonder if the admonition not to "covet" might apply even when there is
no jealousy involved -- only a kind of miserliness. I live on a low
budget, do most of my shopping at Aldi's and Sav-A-Lot, watch for sales
at other stores, but that can itself become an addictive process. Buying
on sale and stocking up can become a goal rather than a means -- with
stuff taking up space and not getting used. Same for rummage sales and
flea markets. The moral principle I have to step back and focus on is,
material things are for USE, not for pride of simply HAVING them, or even
pride at having GOT them without spending much money.

If you decide you want one LIKE it, are able to buy it, are not depriving
anyone (or yourself) of something he/she really needs, and having/using
it is not sinful, then it is not coveting.

To want that particular item and to scheme so that the person sells it to
you, is, even if you do not actually act on the desire.

Rev. Ev
I guess the key words you mentioned to determine if it is a "covet"
situation - is if you desire something in a sinful way. I wouldn't
wish the trouble King David brought on himself on anybody, including
myself. Much too much!
On the other hand I think about shopping, now that's another story.
I think of the times have I seen something a friend has and I go out and
buy the same thing.
If I see something enough times, that I really like, there stands a good
chance I'll start to want one too. Is that to covet? What do you
think?

Covet means to be jealous of or to desire in a 'sinful' way.
EX: King David saw Bathsheba, who was Uriah's wife, desired her (lusted)
and took her while Uriah was away - impregnated her and finally had Uriah
killed to cover his sin. Read II Sam. 11.

Hope this helps you.

God bless you abundantly today and always!
