Here is a true-life response to the story, sent by someone I forwarded

It's a cute joke, but I can tell you of a similar incident which is a
true story.

The first year that my brother-in-law was in his present house in the
Monsey area of New York, he invited us for Passover, and we drove out to
admire the new house.

We needed to acquire provisions for the trip back to ilwaukee, so my
sister-in-law pointed us to a small, kosher grocery store owned and run
by chassidim. My wife gave me a list of what to buy, and I went to the
store.

I was unable to find one item on the shelf, and I noticed two obviously
non-Jewish fellows who were stocking shelves and speaking Spanish to one
another. I do not speak Spanish, but I thought they might be able to
help me, so I walked up and asked them where I might find the item in
English. They both gave me blank stares; obviously, neither of them
spoke English. Then, one of them asked me in passable, Mexican-accented
Yiddish to repeat the question.

I did, he showed me what I was looking for, I paid, and I left laughing
like crazy. in that store (this happened about 10 years ago), Yiddish
was a much more commonly spoen language than English.

Cheers,
