Our proposition was also ridiculous. A friend of mine who was certain she
wanted to vote that marriage is only a man and a woman couldn't even
remember how she voted. It seems that was true of a large percentage of
the voters. We all know that if the question had been straight up "Is
marriage the union of one man and one woman?" the vote would have been
70% yes. A former state supreme court justice, now a professor at
Marquette law school, was interviewed on what this new amendment would
mean. She said, it will mean lots of litigation as people try to sort out
how the vague but complex language actually applies to all kinds of
situations. Most of the senior groups in the state, for instance,
recommended a no vote because of the implications for widowed seniors who
choose not to seek a marriage license when getting together with someone
new, but want to visit each other in the event of hospitalization.

P.S. I hope we can find a Republican who is as worthy of support as your
Democratic governor. In this state, right now, I'm not sure we have one.
But I've said many times, I know many good, decent, honest, congenial,
capable Republicans who I can agree on with most of the important things
-- I just haven't seen any of them running for office lately. My father
voted for a Republican for governor of Illinois. She lost, but she may
have some potential in the future.
