Jeanene, most Christian women appreciate what I believe would be my
starting point:
God did not make Eve from Adam's rib. God took away one SIDE of the
original Adam, to make a woman (isha) and what was left became man (ish).
It is hard to follow in European translations, because Adam is mistaken
for a proper name, and the words Adam and Ish are freely interchanged as
"man" either in singular or plural. Anyway, most women appreciate that
God knows, even if many theologians do not, that they represent one half
of the original image of God, not an afterthought made from a small
piece.
Orthodox Jewish women don't need to be told that, they and the males in
their family can read the original Hebrew. However, Orthodox Judaism is
not responsible for the manner in which I employ this clarification. I
wouldn't visit that responsibility on anyone but me.
There is also the fact that English, clumsy language in many ways, lacks
the distinction between anthropos and andros (mankind and sexually male
person) which Greek and many other languages have, therefore Adam and ish
are hard to distinguish.
Siarlys
P.S. Thanks Lance. And Jeanene, I take your comment as tongue in cheek
and sincere at the same time. No offense taken. (Although I rather liked
Bob Delaney's remark to Patrick in The Tenants of Time, "offense was
given Patrick, you are not very observant this morning."
P.P.S. Oh, I see Jeanene has written again. There is nothing I desire
more than to have a wholesome and inspirational effect on young children.
Inspiring with my own sense of wholesome of course. I would like to teach
God with a lot of theological verbiage stripped away, but I would still
rely on the Bible. Is there any other authority available? I don't know
of one.
P.P.P.S. Thanks again Lance. If I stretch people's minds a little, I am
happy to leave what they truly believe between them and God. There are
only two approaches to The Truth: burn everyone at the stake who doesn't
verbalize it your way, or let God judge and be reasonably courteous about
the differences of perception. How could we falliable mortals possibly
see the Whole Truth in one human lifetime? Oh, I forget, Jeanene is
Anglican. (All in good humor Jeanene, but your ancestors did give my
Presbyterian, Baptist and Puritan ancestors a really hard time about 300
years ago.)
P.P.P.P.S. I do have a niece, a nephew, and a Little Brother,
greenBubble, and believe it or not, I can break things down for children
sometimes. Most kids like me.
