It is easy to understand why God might not admit everyone into eternal
life, when their life on earth is over and done and weighed, but it is
difficult to comprehend why God would bother to torture anyone, no matter
how depraved, for all eternity. What's the point? It makes for lurid
fiction that sells action books, but what's in it for God?

Scripture does provide an alternative perspective: Jesus used the parable
of how withered dead branches are gathered up by a farmer and burned.
Well, a farmer does not gather up dead branches to roast them slowly over
hot coals for maximum pain. They are simply useless to him, so he wants
to reduce them quickly to a useable substance and recycle them as
fertilizer. I don't want to get back into good works again, salvation by
faith is important, and it is a matter of grace. But God may not bother
to torture souls for eternity. Think how the shrieks of agony would
disturb his joy and peace.
