After reading this go to Google Earth, that is if you don't already have it. You have to load a small program but its worth it and its free.

I did mention that I don't get into Phila much, but did have occasion to go in four times last Fall to the Wills Eye Hospital for my wife. Cataracts don't you know, shes fine now and everything is good. Wills Eye is in the heart of the city, that is the very center. The streets are kept clean in that area because of the attractions there, Independence Hall, Liberty Bell etc. The rest of the city stinks and is very dirty. Its not a place that I would want to live. Taxes are high and like every large city it has a high crime rate compared to the Burbs. However there is a lot of money to be made there if a person  can land the right job. Decent housing is very expensive in the city and you are either in a condo or row home or rent. Extreme North Phila is the exception, single homes but pricey.

I know people that work in the city but commute either by car, parking is very expensive, or they use public transportation. 

The surrounding counties would be a better place to live and raise kids. The Phila. School District has been taken over by the state and let out to a private co because they were graduating kids that can't reed or right.

Now check out Google Earth and type in Phila, PA. It should take you there. You can see the congestion and how crowded it is. Look at the surrounding counties. Lots of room. Go west to Center County Pa. Thats where I want to move, but my wife isn't having any part of it. Married 40 yrs. so I guess its to late to leave her now

I know that what I told you isn't very encouraging but I'm not a big fan of large cities and I would move in a heart beat.

Please be aware that what you see on Google Earth is about two years old. We have had a lot of housing starts in this area but there is still lots of room.

Yea Me too, 2 boys and 2 girls and they all have me wrapped around their little finger, love em.

  We got our fourth grandchild on July 1.  We now have two boys and two girls.  The girls live here by us and the boys live in Salt Lake City.  It's their dad who applied in Philly.  I don't know of anything specific.  Just wanted to know if there was anything they SHOULD know.  I don't think he had heard back yet and it may not happen anyway.  He just asked what I knew about Philly.  I was there once in 1971.  My impression was it was a pretty run-down place, but, I was not there for too long so I'm not sure I really got a good picture.  AND, it has been 35 years.  
  Congratulations on your retirement.  I know I couldn't just sit around the house either.

    Don't have much to say on this board, Siarlys gets on and pretty much dominates the board. ( Sorry Siarlys, you should look at what you say from our side).

    I will be retiring June 30th and am looking forward to it. I will be taking July off and going back to work in August, don't know what I"ll be doing , just know that I won"t be able to sit home.

    Anyway I don,t get into Phila. much but I would be glad to help you any way that I can. What do you need to know...

      Are you still out there Dave?  I haven't heard from you or seen you posting on the board for a while.  I don't get on as much as I use to either.
      I have a question maybe you can answer.  My son just graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in chemistry.  He applied for a job in Philadelphia.  Do you know much about Philadelphia?  Any info you could share would be appreciated.  I'm not sure what company he applied with.
