The chapter of Proverbs about the woman "more precious than rubies" is
often cited as authority for the subordination of women and keeping them
out of the workplace, confined more or less at home. However, I noticed
once again last Sunday that the woman described has independent
discretion to spend family finances, is expected to be astute at buying
and selling real estate, obviously spends a good deal of her time out in
the community, and her husband's role is to observe with admiration and
awe the skill by which she maintains the family's prosperity.
