It's a HISTORY not a discourse on democracy.

Frank, what does Winston Churchill know about great democracies? Its a wonder we got through World War II with our alliance with Britain intact -- well, really, its only because they needed us SO badly if they were going to survive at all. But all through the war, they were intent on keeping their empire, even if it derailed the war effort against Japan and Germany, the USA was intent on freedom and independence for all the rest of their colonies. Read Stilwell and the American Experience in China. He darn near came to war with the Brits, they were so unwilling to confront the Japanese, so fixated on NOT letting Asians play the military role Stilwell was assiduously training them for. When he moved ahead and started taking parts of Burma back from the Japanese, he wrote "Will this burn the Limies!"

I would like to wish your son 'good luck' on his tour in Iraq.  You can be proud of him.
As far as reading I am currently reading 'A History of the English Speaking Peoples' by Winston Churchill.
It is a 4 book set, 'The Birth of Britain', 'The New World', 'The Age of Revolution', and 'The Great Democracies'.  I am on book 2.  Interesting reading if you are in to history.  Interesting, but not gripping.

Sad, sad, sad.  I have now read book #3 three times in as many days.  I wish I hadn't returned the first two to my daughter...  I started the new Cornwell book 'Scarpetta' last night.  Does anyone else read Patricia Cornwell?

My son PFC Headlee, Joseph is being shipped to Iraq on January 30th.  He is a part of a month-long deployment of more than 10,000 troops to the middle east.

Haha, I read right over the first book title and missed that fact. Thank you Siarlys!

If I remember correctly recent reviews of a movie made from the first book, they are about a teen vampire who actually falls in love with a girl at his high school.

In the way of books, what is on your nightstand right now?

I am half-ashamed to say that in the past three days I:  finished Twilight in less than 24 hours and re-read it the next day, was ravenous and finished New Moon in less than a day, and am currently reading Eclipse.  This is the series of 4 books written by Stephanie Meyers and on the reading list of every young woman/teen.  I am fascinated by the premise and have loved every minute detail of Edward, no scratch that, I meant the story.  Whew, I wish I was 17 again...  I can barely remember the feelings the author describes so vividly.

I might have to buy book #4 since my daughter is still reading it in California and wouldn't let me bring it home with me today.  I had a three day visit with my one and only granson Shawn who is 20 months old.  I also visited with his parents, but the trip was really only to see and play and read with him.

So, let me hear about your current book and what you think about it.
