Here, I think, is something we can mostly agree on.
I just read that a group of 9/11 families is protesting plans to include
a museum called the "International Freedom Center" at ground zero in New
York. This group of families wants a monument only, period.
I believe they are right.
One of them, noting the presence of an ACLU executive director on the
museum board, asked "Do we really want to entrust the meaning of Sept. 11
to a man who is calling our secretary of defense in time of war
dishonorable and dishonest?"
Now I happen to be among those who believe that the secretary of defense
IS both dishonorable and dishonest, and I don't mind saying that in time
of war. I can think of no more important time to say it.
But for that very reason, I agree that the museum has no place at the
memorial. Inevitably, any museum will express a viewpoint, in the
decisions as to what will be presented, and how it will be presented.
That will provoke controversy. The memorial should be a memorial. Period.
I haven't checked it out yet, but there is a web site called
