There were a few centuries in Romania where everyone did their cooking at
outdoor brick ovens, some distance from the house. The reason was, that
the king had imposed a tax on chimneys, so nobody wanted to have a
chimney poking out of their house.

But I like the inheritance tax. I read an idea a few months ago at
SinceSlicedBread.com that the inheritance tax should be the ONLY tax. Let
people keep their money while they are alive, and let the funds and
wealth of those who are gone pay for government. After all, you can't
take it with you.

(Like today's inheritance tax, there would be an exemption for the first
$500,000 or so, to allow for sentimental heirlooms, even beloved family
homes, to be passed on, but for those with more than that -- let the dead
pay taxes so the living don't have to).
