Reminds me of a true story I heard from a former neighbour of mine, a
retired chemistry teacher. During the Second World War, he had been a
radar maintenance instructor (radar at the time was a new and highly
secret invention). When one of those early radar sets was first warmed
up, a green light would come on if all the circuits were in order, and a
red light if there was some problem. The colour of the lights was
determined by a plastic cap over a white light bulb.
This fellow's favourite final exam for his freshly minted maintenance
technicians was to reverse the two caps, and wait to see how long it
took them to figure out what he had done.
