Spices in Europe during the middle ages were expensive, having to be brought from the Far East. Many small city-states existed along the route, one of which was ruled over by Justin III. He determined to "corner the market" on a particular spice. Where he could not buy the spices, he had them stolen by his henchmen. He soon developed a reputation and became known as: Justin, the Nicker of Thyme.
